Elijah
Prophet of Fire
Prophet who opposed Baal worship and demonstrated God's power on Mount Carmel.
Elijah was one of Israel's most dramatic prophets, ministering during the reign of King Ahab when Israel had fallen into Baal worship. Through powerful demonstrations of God's power—including calling down fire from heaven, raising the dead, and being sustained miraculously during a drought—Elijah confronted idolatry and called Israel back to worship of the true God. After his victory on Mount Carmel, he experienced both spiritual highs and lows, eventually being mentored by God in a "still small voice." Rather than experiencing death, Elijah was taken to heaven in a whirlwind, and later appeared alongside Moses at Jesus's transfiguration.
